Sanchi :Sanchi is a small town which lies in the Raisen district in Madhya Pradesh and built by the Emperor Ashoka. It situated at the footsteps of a hill and is famous for a number of Buddhist monuments. The place is famous for its monuments and Buddhist Stupas.
It is the spot of several Buddhist monuments dating from the 3rd century BCE to the 12th century CE and is one of the important pilgrim spots for all the Buddhist devotees where they come from different parts of the world.
Sanchi is a peaceful and sleepy place on top of a mount has the singular distinction of telling a continuous Buddhist history of over 2,000 years in stone. Sanchi tourism offers various Stupas, holy shrines, Chaityas, Temples, Torana gateways, pillars and monasteries-the great and ideal examples of Buddhist architectural and inspired art in India. The monuments of Sanchi have carvings that represent the culture and Buddhist myths of the place. Sanchi was declared as the World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1989.
Sanchi University also established - Sanchi University of Buddhist-Indic Studies is a state university located in Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh, India. It was established in 2013 by the Government of Madhya Pradesh under the Sanchi University of Buddhist-Indic Studies Act, 2012.
The Great Stupas : The great stupas at Sanchi were constructed by ruler Ashoka during the 3rd century BC. on the top of a hill. It is the oldest stone structure in India. 120ft in width and 54 ft height, with a massive hemispherical it worn smooth by centuries of pilgrims. Originally these stupas where constructed of brick but later was enclosed within a stone. The walls and the gateways of these stupas build us obtain very enthralled by its designs and carving. The gates have been so finely carved and with such motivation that they are view as the finest of all Buddhist toranas. The wisdom and the life of Buddha are largely expressed in the figure of Buddhist art and sign(symbol).
The Four Gateway : The Gateways which are also known as Torans was built in 35BC which are considered as an outstanding look of Buddhism in the earth. The Four Gate Ways are featured by carvings which are clearly distinct and representing the scenes from the life Buddha and Jatakas which relates mostly to the life of birth.
THE EASTERN GATEWAY:
Represents the young prince, Gautama leaving his father's fortress on his journey towards explanation and the vision his mother had previous to his birth.
THE WESTERN GATEWAY:
Describes the seven personification of the Buddha.
THE NORTHERN GATEWAY:
Circulated by a wheel-of-law, this represents the wonder associated with the Buddha as told in the Jatakas.
THE SOUTHERN GATEWAY:
The birth of Gautama is exposed in a sequence of significantly rich carvings.
Other Stupas : The other stupas in Sanchi are the Stupa 2nd and Stupa 3rd. Stupa 2nd is one of the most attractive of the lesser Stupas. There are no gateways here but the medallions which beautify the surrounding walls are attractive. Flowers, animals, people and some legendary persons decorate the walls. Stupa 3rd places in the north-east gateways of the Great Stupa. It has only one gateway. It is lesser in size and similar in design to the Great Stupa. It is said that this Stupa was constructed soon after the Great Stupa was built.
Ashoka Pillar : The Ashoka Pillar (Stambh) is situated very close to the Southern Gateway of the Great Stupa and is famous for the structural balance and aesthetic proportions. The pillar is constructed in the Greco Buddhist style and is wonderfully carved.
Buddhist Vihara : The Buddhist Vihara is a famous site and important center of Buddhist traditions and has the relics of Satdhara Stupa. It is located few kilometers from Sanchi and the relics are kept in a glass casket on a stage in the internal chamber.
The Graat Bowl : The Great Bowl is very famous for it is carved from one piece of stone. this mammoth bowl contained the food that was distributed among the monks of Sanchi. The Great Bowl or else known as Gumbha is a valuable relic showing the wonderful creative grandeur.
Gupta Temple : This temple is now in ruins The temple was constructed in 5 the century and one of brilliant Example of earliest temple architecture in India.But whatever is left tells a story of greatness and a temple which had no match through its periods.
Sanchi Museum : The Archaeological Survey of India maintained a place museum at Sanchi.
How to Getting there:-
By Air: 46 km. from Sanchi (via Diwanganj), Bhopal International Airport (Raja Bhoj Airport) is the nearest Airport. It is connected with Delhi, Mumbai, Gwalior, Indore, Khajurhao and Jabalpur with regular flights and also connected with international flights.
By Train : The most convenient railheads are Vidisha (12 km) & Bhopal (46 km) and Sanchi is a small station.
By Road : Sanchi is connected with Bhopal (46 kms.) and Vidisha (12 km) by regular bus service. Frequent buses, tempos and Radio-taxis are available from Bhopal.
