The Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological place of the Paleolithic, showing the initial traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent, and so the starting of the South Asian Stone period. The nearest metro city from this place is Bhopal(Madhya Pradesh, India).
The word Bhimbetka is said to get from Bhimbaithka, meaning "Sitting Place of Bhima". Bhimbetka owes its name to the characters of the great & largest epic in the world, the Mahabharata. When the Pandawas (five brothers) were expelled from their empire, they came here and stayed in these caves, the enormous rocks seating the gigantic frame of second Pandava (Bhima).

Caves : The rock shelters and caves of Bhimbetka have a large number of paintings. The oldest paintings are considered to be 30,000 years old, but some of the geometric figures date to as in recent times as the medieval age. The Vagetable colors are used which have endured through time because the drawings were normally prepared deep inside a place or on inside walls. The drawings and paintings can be classified under seven different periods.

By Air: 46 km. from Bhimbetka, Bhopal International Airport (Raja Bhoj Airport) is the nearest Airport. It is connected with Delhi, Mumbai, Gwalior, Indore, Khajurhao and Jabalpur with regular flights and also connected with international flights.
By Train : The nearest railway stations from Bhimbetka are Bhopal railway station (40 km)and Habibganj railway station (34 km). All mail, express and passenger trains halt here Station.
By Road : Bhimbetka is connected with Bhopal (40 kms.) by regular bus service. Frequent buses, tempos and Radio-taxis are available from Bhopal.
